The internet computer IPv6 nr.: a privacy issue caused by IPv6.
Your IPv6 connection to the internet:
Any computer connected to the internet does so with an IP number.
This is just like your home address: state, city, street address and apartment number.
Together it is unique.
Currently IPv4 is running out of numbers, so IPv6 starts to be used.
It works similar, but different.
The new thing is that it contains the MAC-address of the apparatus connecting your computer to the internet or a periodically generated random value instead.
And this MAC-address, or random value, is unique.
Usually the MAC-address of e.g. the ADSL router is subject to this, not the MAC-address in your computer.
Improving your privacy on this point would mean changing the MAC-address, or random value, which could be possible.
And, something you should do now too, is having changed your IP number by your internet provider.
Or go to a different internet provider, he will give you a different IP number too.
The layout of an IPv6 number, it consists of 128 bits:
- the format prefix: 001, 3 bits
- the top-level aggregator allocated by IANA, to local internet service providers, 13 bits and 8 future use bits
- the next-level aggregator, for a specific customer site, 24 bits
- the site-level aggregator, for sites or subnets within a site, 16 bits
- the Extended Unique Identifier (EUI-64) address, 64 bits, of which 48 bits either assigned to or derived from the the MAC-address of the network card
- this totals 128 bits
